Good morning.  Here is your Final Question.  Remember FINAL PROJECTS are being shared tomorrow.

  1. Describe, in detail how marketing has changed in recent years.  What new ways are marketers using to get people’s attention? How are they researching differently? Describe as many ways that marketing is evolving as you can.   (10 marks)

****Remember: There are a lot of very smart people competing for you attention and money.  There are hidden messages and motive behind almost everything we see and read.   Pay attention and think critically and you will be better able to see it.  Good Luck!!

Commercial Day

Good morning, today we will be looking at Crisis Management.  This ususally falls on the shoulders of management and marketing.

To start, read the case study about Tylenol from 1982.  This is seen as one of the more successful ways that a company has tackled a very damaging incident to their brand.

Questions

1, What did Johnson and Johnson do to tackle the problem and rebuild trust in their brand (point form)?

Here is a more recent example.  Chipotle restaurants have had several customers become seriously ill from e.coli (a bacteria from the digestive system).  This LINK explains part of what the company is doing. By closing stores they are taking a risk of highlighting a problem or appearing proactive.

2. What is Chipotle doing to tackle the problem?

3. Thinking of what J and J did  (Tylenol).  Do you think that this plan will help or hurt the brand?  Why or why not

Go to the following LINK

From there, answer the following questions.

1. What are some things that will make the 'best' vehicles more likely that their target market will want them?

2. What are the features/things that make the 'worst' cars less desirable to their target markets?

3. Now pick 3 cars from the following LINK.  For each one, please say the make and model of the car.  Read the review and then try to predict whether or not it will be a successful model of vehicle and WHY you think that.  Remember the 4 P's, Branding and Target Market.

FINAL PROJECTS DUE FRIDAY!!!! Pick One

BACKFIRE!!! Great Commercial, but it Backfired!!
Are you Good Enough to Fail?
The Assignment:  You are to come up with a GOOD Commercial that uses good strategies and captures people’s attention.  Since you are experts in Marketing, that should be easy enough.  However the challenge is that you have to make a good commercial that is for a bad product.  In other words, come up with a bad idea, and then sell it with excellent promotion.   You may work alone, or in a group up to a MAXIMUM of 3 people.
Outline for the assignment:
  • You must create either a video commercial or a series of print advertisements that are good quality and use proven marketing strategies.  The ad must be for a BAD idea.  It must be a GOOD commercial. (30)

  •  After you finish your commercial/poster/video presentation, the class as a whole will decide whether or not your commercial is a ``GOOD``  and whether or not it would actually Backfire.    (10 marks) {Peer evaluated}
  • TOTAL 40 Marks

OR

PSA Advertising/Final Project.
The Assignment:  You are to come up with a commercial that is designed to:
  • Increase student awareness about topic that you feel is important
  • Attempt to get people to try to change their behaviour or the behaviour of others
  • Attempt to change peoples’ opinion on a topic
  • Attempt to get people to donate money to a cause.
Outline for the assignment:
  • Come up with a topic to make your PSA about.  It will be easier for you if you personally feel that the topic is important
  • Remember that with PSA’s, emotional connection is key!  Music can help, personal stories, feeling of hope or change, simple images, and shock.  You may choose to add in an ad extension, such as a link to a website or social networking site (real or made up)
  •  After you finish your commercial/poster/video presentation, the class as a whole will decide whether or not your commercial was a ‘good’ commercial and then if it actually achieved its goal (making students stop and think) in other words, was it an effective advertisement.  (10 marks) {Peer evaluated}
